Mouse Books

There is a genre of books that my sister and I affectionately refer to as "Stupid Mouse Books". This was used as an insult between us exactly once before being adopted as a term of endearment.

In order to be a "stupid mouse book", a book must:
- Be about a little creature in a big world
- Be a chapter book intended for young readers
- Have those vibes

Here is a list of books that we both agree are in the genre, with a section for near misses.

Harvest Mouse (detail), Pierre Jacques Smit, 1890s
cover
Tales From Dimwood Forest series - Avi (1995-2020)
The essential Mouse Books. Mice. The unforgiving wild. What else do you need. My sister named her pet Betta fish “Rye” after one of the characters.
cover
The Mouse and his Child - Russell Hoban (1967)
A wind-up tin pair of mice face the challenges of the world. It gets weirdly philosophical at times. Probably my favorite on this list. I love when they talk about the concept of infinity.
cover
The Tale of Despereaux - Kate DiCamillo (2003)
A little mouse who lives in a castle goes on a quest to save a human princess. I re-read this one multiple times in elementary school.
Word of Mouse - James Patterson (2016)
A blue mouse escapes from a testing facility and into suburbia. Clumsily incorporates themes of animal rights activism and christianity.
A Nest for Celeste - Henry Cole (2010)
The Mouse and the Motorcycle series - Beverly Cleary (1965)
The School Mouse - Dick King-Smith (1997)
Young Fredle - Cynthia Voigt (2011)
cover
Rabbit Hill - Robert Lawson (1944)
The animals of Rabbit Hill anticipate the arrival of “New Folks” moving into the nearby house. About rabbits instead of mice but it’s close enough.
Harry Kitten and Tucker Mouse - George Selden (1986)
The prequal to "A cricket in Times Square"

Adjacent But Not Quite:

cover
Watership Down - Richard Adams (1972)
Seems to check all the boxes, yet doesn’t quite have the vibes. Is it because it is more complex? Is it because of the focus on rabbit culture and mythology? It is simply not a stupid mouse book.
Gooseberry Park - Arthur Howard (1998)
Mostly from a dog’s POV, but there is a very prominent squirrel.
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane - Kate DiCamillo (2006)
Crazy story about the life trajectory of a porcelain rabbit doll.
cover
The Doll People series - Ann M Martin & Laura Godwin (2008)
Various adventures involving dolls. They are the size of mice but sadly this doesn’t count.
Time Stops for no Mouse series - Micheal Hoeye
The mice are too human for this to count
The Rescuers series - Margery Sharp
The mice are too human for this to count

"Animal Epics":

Redwall series - Brian Jaques
Mouseguard comic series - David Petersen
Silverwing series - Kenneth Oppel
Guardians of Ga’Hoole series - Kathryn Lasky
Warriors series - Erin Hunter
