Old Kirby Fandom

Let’s travel back to 2012…
Kirby’s Return to Dreamland is the newest game, Meta Knight is banned from Smash Bros Brawl tournaments, and we are yet to be blessed with the presence of characters like Taranza and Morpho Knight. What is the fandom up to?

THE ANIME

“Kirby Right Back at Ya”/ “Hoshii no Kaabii” was alive and fresh in everyone's minds. It influenced fan content A LOT.

Characters

Anime-exclusive characters were very often seen in fan work. Here’s a list of some of them
- Tiff & Tuff
- Eacargoon
- Knuckle Joe
- Sirica
- NME Salesman

As well as monsters like
- Wolfwrath
Badass wolf monster that has history with Meta Knight. What more could you want???

And characters from “the war” like:
- Garlude
- The Knights
Named after knights of the round table, their names were butchered in early fan-subs and so they were/are called a variety of names. Sir Arthur, Sir Percival (Falspar), Sir Lancelot (Nonsurat), and Sir Galahad (Dragato). I honestly don't know how some of these names came to be.

- “Jecra” (Knuckle Joe’s father)
Jecra was a very widley accepted fanon name for him that is used to this day. "OperationHoshiiNoKabii" on Tumblr writes in this post, "Oh that's my fault, lol. It was a name I saw someone use on a Japanese fansite back in like, 2003? And I liked it so I used it in my Kirby fics and everyone pretty much copied me. (I think some people assumed it must be his official name since I did the subs.)"

"The War"

In the anime, Meta Knight once fought against Nightmare's monsters in the Great Star Army (GSA). This was very important in the lore of fan content. Those who fought in this war were called "Star Warriors". Sometimes "Star Warrior" was used to refer to Kirby and Meta Knight's species as well.

The common term for Kirby's species was/is "Puffballs". This stamp does a good job expressing this.

King Dedede

The anime also HEAVILY influenced the fan characterization of King Dedede. Anime Dedede is rude, childish, and likes to ham it up. Game Dedede did not have a lot going on at the time, except being in Smash Bros, so sometimes we did see a more goofy Dedede.

Meta knight speed round !

Because of his voice in the english dub, many people headcannon him as Spanish or Mexican. Very cool tbh

“Galaxia” did talk in the anime, and it was common in fan content

This was HUGE. So many comics of these two duking it out for various reasons.

>Much maskless meta knight
For some reason, people were obsessed with depicting meta knight without his mask.

In some anime promotional art, Meta knight's sword had light reflecting off of it which made it appear striped- many older meta knight plushies have striped swords because of this

>Meta knight'seyes changing color
Meta knight's eyes sometimes changed color in the anime to reflect his emotions. So cool.

Marx was missing in action for literally over 20 years until Star Allies came out and he just showed up.

Yes it was only a year but it was very effective.

10000 ocs

Kirby ocs were the shit! They still are but EVERYONE had at least one. Re-colors are everywhere, and widely accepted because let’s be real the characters are literally a ball with limbs. Sprite animations of ocs fighting each other are also very popular.

Marx odd eyes

Marx was/is very often depicted with red/blue heterochromia. No reason really- it was just badass.
