P.E. Class

Elementary school gym class (we exclusively called it P.E.) was usually a fun time! We had a wonderful teacher who was bald and would always wear funny hats. One of these hats was a deflated kickball that was cut in half. Iconic!

The best days were when we got to play "Castle Ball" which is like dodgeball except you are aiming to knock down the other team's "Castles". These were structures made of hula hoops that would fall down when struck by a ball, and could be re-built (provided the other team wasn't pelting you during the construction). Your team won if all three of the other team's castles were down at the same time.

The worst days were the Mile Run and the Pacer Test. The Mile run involved doing laps of the playground until you had reached one mile, with a partner keeping track of the time of each lap. I did not have a lot of running stamina so I always ended up walking most of the way with my sides hurting, before waiting in line to smash my face into the drinking fountain.

As most American children know, "The FitnessGram PACER Test is a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues". It involves running back and forth between two lines, with a timer that gets shorter every few laps. It made me super anxious for some reason, and I always tapped out before I was all that tired because of anxiety.

Other than that, I had a lot of fun running around and playing in this class. The teacher was very talented at engaging kids and making exercise and health education enjoyable.

Also, I bit a kid once during P.E. because I was frustrated. I don't remember enough to write about it in any detail. I'm sorry Ian, you didn't do anything wrong!
