>Back to "Bowyer"

In the 2023 Super Mario RPG
re-make, Mack's name was
changed to "Claymorton". This
makes more sense than the "Mack the Knife" reference, seeing as he is a sword and not a knife. I just continue to use Mack because I'm "old".

What is this thing?

Mack is one of several weapon-themed enemies from Super Mario RPG. He jumps around on a giant sword like a pogo stick (Although some people believe the sword itself is Mack. Could be tbh.).
He is the first major boss in the game- Mario and Mallow fight him in the Mushroom Kingdom castle.

You may notice that I rarely include the actual sword when depicting Mack. This is because I just like drawing the little guy more lol. Sometimes I give him pupils for better line of sight.

Facts

- He uses the attacks Flame Wall and Flame, and is weak to lightning.

- I think the name "Claymorton" is funny and cute. I also think refrenceing "Mack the Knife" in Mario is craaazy.

- His Japanese name is "Kenzōru" which is derived from "sword'

Mack almost always ends up as a companion character to Bowyer in my work. Don't get me wrong, I love him to the point he is on the Blorbo List, but he just didn't stand out to me as much initially. Here are a few factors that probably contributed to that:

- Less narrative buildup, and unfortunatley the setting is not as cool as the Forest Maze. You'd think the Mushroom Kingdom castle would be more interesting but it is kind of just a basic RPG-type place. We would have to wait until Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story for that to pop off imo.

- No Geno yet. Also, because he is such an early boss, his attacks are not as varied or interesting.

He has developed more as he shows up in my work, I have kind of crafted him into something unique from the game, like with Bowyer. For example, we never see him breathe fire in the game but he totally should so I just decided he can do that.
